Ten Everyday Things I Love About My Daughter

1. She wakes up in the morning with a song on her lips, calling her best friends’s names, a smile and cuddles for mum and dad

2. She watches the sky and the birds for a little while, after getting out bed

3. She finds time in her morning for play, tantrums, dance, mess and fun

4. She enjoys music

5. She remembers to give Scotty (teddy) and Raaga (doll) each a little time with her, when playing with bubbles

6. She can tell me off for being more attentive to my gadgets than her with just a look or an act of kindness

7. She drinks ‘tea’ because mum and dad do. She knows her tea is different from ours (warm water with honey and cinnamon)

8. She knows when to say ‘Thank You’, ‘Please’ and ‘Sorry’

9. She shows me a different perspective to at least one thing every day

10. We say goodnight to the stars and the moon at bedtime. She understands that some nights I need to just hum or be quiet instead of singing to her. Other nights, she tells me what rhymes she wants me to sing

I used to wonder whether I could ever be a parent. Then I became one. I was handed a delicate little bundle that I was terrified of bringing home. I didn't know how to be a parent and I was sure 'winging it' was not the right way to do it. Little did I know at the time that there is no right way. The baby knew what she wanted and all I had to do was figure it out along the way. As she grows up, she helps me learn what I need to know... I just need to pay attention to her.
